Getting
P.O. Boxes
in Fern
Acres
- We
need 150 signatures of residents who have a street address for your
residence.
- A
pole number will not be accepted by the post office.
- There
will be a set of boxes at 4 different locations along Puhala.
- Each
set will serve one of the main roads.
- They
will be on the streamside of Puhala.
- Each
set of boxes will be located somewhere before the turnoff to the road they serve.
- Mountain
View will become your post office.
If
you desire a mailbox or want to keep your present mailbox at a post office
you
will have to start paying for it. Right
now there is a one-year wait time for a PO box in Kurtistown and Mountain
View.
The process (which will
take some time to accomplish) is:
- We
have to get 150 signatures and addresses in Fern Acres.
- The
post office will do their survey.
- We
provide suitable areas along Puhala for the boxes.
- The
post office installs the boxes.
Some
other points:
- You
will still get UPS and FEDEX delivery to your home like you have now.
- You
have to have something they can make a delivery to other than your guard dog.
- A
personal mailbox by your gate would be an idea; then
other people can leave notes too.
- With
1,996 lots here we should be able to come up with 150 residents.
- If
you have multiple lots with building permits, you can apply for a box for each
address.

The
state has a 30' wide trail that parallels Puhala; this is the Old Volcano
Trail. We may be able to use part of this for the postal person to access
the back
of the boxes. It will take time to explore this. Many
of you have noticed that the road to Hawaiian Acres is offset from ours. Their
entrance road to Road One is the Old Volcano Trail.
